WWCRL: Red Sox win 2009 Championship!

Posted by Richard Grenier at Jun 27, 2009 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Coming into the 2009 West Warwick Cal Ripken season, the Centreville Bank Red Sox were the favorites to win the league championship.  At the midpoint of the season, however, they had to hold off the surprise efforts of upstarts, WW PIC Athletics and Richard’s Oil Marlins.  Holding onto a half game lead with an 8-6 record, the Red Sox not only turned back the Athletics and Marlins in divisional play, but were able to peak offensively and receive the opportunistic breaks to win the 2009 league championship.

During the regular season and the playoffs, the Red Sox lead the league in scoring.  Offensively, the Red Sox were led by two twelve year old sluggers, Nick Motroni (32/52, .615, 9 doubles, 4 triples,12 home runs, 34 runs scored, and an OBP of .738) and Greg D’Ambrosca (28/50, .560, 13 doubles, 4 triples, 1 home run, 14 runs scored, and an OBP of .661), who combined for 43 extra bases hits.  Also, contributing to the Sox offense were Tyler Boisclair (21/55, .382, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run, 25 runs scored, and an OBP of .531), Kurtis Quinn (16/50, .320, 4 doubles, 1 home run, 24 runs scored, and an OBP of .525), Mitchell Moore (7 hits, 5 runs, and an OBP of .440 in nine games played), Andrew D’Ambrosca (6 singles, 2 doubles, and ten runs scored), Andrew Skorski (5 hits, 13 walks, and an OBP of .471), Nick D’Ambra (11 runs scored, 17 walks, and an OBP of .548), Mike Tetrault (13 runs scored, 17 walks, and an OBP of .490), Jacob Valenti-Ochs (4 hits, 5 runs scored, and 7 walks), and Jordan Hendrick (3 runs and 9 walks).

 Winner’s Bracket Semi-Final:  Red Sox 6 Marlins 1

Led by the combined four hit pitching of Nick Motroni, Greg D’Ambrosca, and Tyler Boisclair, the Red Sox defeated the pesky Marlins, 6-1.

Motroni, who worked the first two innings, struck out five consecutive batters.  D’Ambrosca, who worked in middle relief, struck out two and allowed just one hit.  Boisclair struck out three and allowed only one run on three hits.

In the bottom of the first inning, Kurtis Quinn lead off with a double and scored two outs later on a r.b.i. single by D’Ambrosca. In the bottom of the second inning, the Red Sox scored two more runs for a 3-0 lead on three walks (Andrew D’Ambrosca and Mike Tetreault) and a timely two run double by Jacob Valenti-Ochs.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Red Sox broke the game open with three runs on hits by Nick D’Ambra (infield hit), Tyler Boisclair (r.b.i. single), and a sacrifice fly by Nick Motroni.Offensively, the Red Sox received hits from Quinn (1/2), Boisclair (1/3), D’Ambrosca (1/2), Mitchell Moore (1/3), Valenti-Ochs (1/1), and D’Ambra (1/2).

Winner’s Bracket Final:  Red Sox 5 Orioles 4

Led by the hitting of Greg D’Ambrosca (single, double, and triple) and the pitching of Nick Motroni and Tyler Boisclair, the Red Sox were able to trump the short handed Titan Sports Orioles, 5-4, in the Winner’s Bracket Final.

In four innings of work, Motroni, who struck out eight batters, allowed only two earned runs on one hit and five walks.  After allowing two runs in the first inning, Motroni retired ten of the next twelve batters he faced.  Tyler Boisclair, who struck out three batters in picking up the save, allowed two runs on two hits and one walk.

In the top of the first inning, the Red Sox scored two runs on hits by Boisclair (single), Motroni (r.b.i. triple), and D’Ambrosca (double).  With the game tied at 2-2 in the top of the third inning, the Red sox took a 3-2 lead when Motroni reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on D’Ambrosca’s r.b.i. triple to right-center.

League Championship:  Red Sox 11 Orioles 10

Counting the league season and playoffs, both the Orioles (18-3) and Red Sox (14-6) were able to beat their opponents with steady pitching, consistent defense, and timely hitting.  In a classic “roller-coaster” game which took a different look in wet conditions, the two teams combined for 19 hits (13 singles, 4 doubles, 2 triples, and 1 home run), 8 errors, and 6 walks in a 11-10 come from behind victory by the Red Sox.In the top of the first inning, the Orioles jumped out to a 5-0 lead on three hits, one walk, and two errors.

After Tyler Boisclair retired the side in order in the top of the third inning, the Red Sox scored two runs in the bottom of the inning.  Nine year old Nick D’Ambra led off with a triple and scored one out later on a Boisclair single to right field.  After a walk to Nick Motroni, D’Ambrosca belted an opposite field double to left-center to scored Boisclair.

The Orioles came right back in the top of the fourth inning with four runs on hits by Kirchmeyer (single), Morel (r.b.i. single), Zincone (r.b.i. single), and Trevor Lawton (r.b.i. triple).

Down 10-5 going into the bottom of the fourth inning, the Red Sox scored six times on four hits, one walk, and three errors. Nine year old Andrew D’Ambrosca led off with a single, moved to second when Mike Tetrault reached on an error, and advanced to third when Andrew Skorski walked to load the bases.  D’Ambra, then, continued his timely hitting with a two run double to right field to cut the O’s lead to 10-7.  Kurtis Quinn grounded out, scoring Skorski to make it 10-8.  After Boisclair reached on a single to left field, D’Ambra scored on a Motroni ground out to make it 10-9.  The stage was set for something dramatic and 12 year old Greg D’Ambrosca did not let the Red Sox faithful down.  On a 1-1 pitch, the left handed slugger hit a two run opposite field home run to cap off the Red Sox come back.

That was the only run reliever Nick Motroni needed as he struck four and walked two to seal the victory for the Red Sox.
