John F. Deering Seasonal Summary - Updated 6-7-2011
John F. Deering, who lost in the Quarter-Finals to Feinstein Middle School (State Runner Up) finished with an overall record of 14-3-1.
In the Preliminary Round of the Middle School State Playoffs, Deering (5th seed) eliminated Mt. St. Charles (12th seed), 10-1, and advanced to a Quarter-Final showdown against Kent County Rival, Feinstein Middle School (4th seed), who defeated Lincoln (13th seed), 9-0.
Ray Zincone (4/4, one double, three triples, three runs scored, and five r.b.i.'s) led a 16 hit attack by Deering on MSC pitchers. In addition to Zincone's break out game, Deering received contributions from Matt Grenier (one single and two runs scored), Kody Greenhalgh (one single, one double, and three runs scored), Tyler Boisclair (two singles, one run scored, and three r.b.i.'s), Mike Pellerin (three singles), Evan Barrera (two singles and one r.b.i.), Andrew In (one single), and Joe Maynard (one single and one r.b.i.).
Joe Maynard, who pitched the first five innings, recorded the victory by allowing only one earned run on two hits. Tom Doran struck out one batter and allowed just one hit in the final two innings of play.
On Wednesday (6-2-2011), Deering (13-2 overall) tied Cole Middle School (13-1 in league play), 8-8 in a non league "tune-up" for the upcoming State Playoffs.
Deering, who hosts Mount Saint Charles on Monday (6-6-2011) in the Preliminary Round, received solid pitching from Evan Barrera, Tom Doran, Ray Zincone.
Offensively, Deering received contributions from Matt Grenier (one run scored and three walks), Jake Woodside (one single and one run scored), Kody Greenhalgh (one double and one run scored), Ray Zincone (one single, one double, one triple, and two runs scored), Tyler Boisclair (one single), Miek Pellerin (one single and one run scored), Tom Doran (one double), Trevor Lawton (one run scored), Joe Maynard (one single), and Andrew In (two singles and a game tying two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning).
On Wednesday (5-25-2011), Deering finished their regular season by defeating Ricci Middle School, 12-2, for their eighth consecutive win. Deering, who finishes the year with a 12-2 record (Central Division - Second Place), will be the number five seed in the upcoming RIPCOA Middle School State Playoffs.
Seventh graders Matt Grenier and Tom Doran, who benefited from the copious amount of runs that Deering produced, combined on a three hitter. Grenier, who picked up his first victory, struck out one batter and allowed two earned runs on three hits. Doran, who pitched the final two innings, struck out two batters and did not allow a hit.
Offensively, the Junior Wizards received support from Mike Pellerin (one single and one r.b.i.), Jake Woodside (one double, one run scored, and three r.b.i.'s), Brian Moretti (two walks and one run scored), Andrew In (one single, one double, one run scored, and one r.b.i.), Evan Barrera (one single, two runs scored, and one r.b.i.), Tom Doran (one run scored and one r.b.i.), Trevor Lawton (one single, one double, one run scored), Tyler Boisclair (one r.b.i.), Ray Zincone (one triple, two runs scored, and two r.b.i.'s), Kody Greenhalgh (one single, one double, and two runs scored), and Matt Grenier (one single, three walks, and one run scored).
On Tuesday (5-24-2011), Deering won their seventh game in row with a 13-2 victory over Ponaganset Middle School.
Since losing to Feinstein Middle School in April, Deering has become the hottest team in Rhode Island Middle School play.
Deering now sports an 11-2 league record (12-2 overall). It is the best record that Deering has had since the 1991 team (21-2) won the Freshman State Championship.
Seventh grader Trevor Lawton won his fifth game of the year with five innings of two-hit pitching. The lanky right hander struck out seven and walked three.
Offensively, the Junior Wizards offense produced 12 hits. Leading the way for Deering were Matt Grenier ( two singles, two walks, one run scored, and three r.b.i.'s), Kody Greenhalgh (two singles and three runs scored), Ray Zincone (two triples, two singles, two runs scored, and three r.b.i.'s), Tyler Boisclair (one single, one run, and three r.b.i.'s), Trevor Lawton (one single and one run), Jake Woodside (one single, two walks, one hit batsman, and one run scored), Evan Barrera (one single, one run scored, one walk, and one r.b.i.), Andrew In (one run scored and one walk), and Joe Maynard (one run scored).
On Monday (5-23-2011), Deering (10-2) upset undefeated Feinstein (10-1), 8-7, to pull within a half game of first place.
With Kody Greenhalgh on third base, Coach Harry Ryan called for a suicide squeeze which Trevor Lawton perfectly placed to score Greenhalgh with the winning run.
The gutsy call capped off a five-run late game rally for Deering, who was trailing 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Deering opportunistically scored three runs on on two walks,one error,and one r.b.i. single by Andrew In.
In the bottom of the seventh inning,Matt Grenier led off with a single to right field, moved to second base when Kody Greenhalgh walked, and scored the tying run when Ray Zincone's sacrifice bunt was mishandled.
Picking up the victory for Deering was Tyler Boisclair. In 2 2/3 innings of relief work, Boisclair allowed only one earned run on one hit and three walks.

On a "misty" Monday (5-16-2011), Deering rolled by Ricci Middle School, 10-2. The win moves Deering to 9-2 on the year.
During the game, Deering's pitchers, Joe Maynard and Andrew In, combined for a rarity in Middle School baseball. Although the two righties combined to walk 12 batters, they did not give up a hit in the seven inning contest.

On Thursday (5-12-2011), Deering turned the tables on Immaculate Conception with a 7-5 victory in Cranston.
Deering, who lost to Immaculate 9-5 last month, received a complete game effort by Trevor Lawton. The lanky right-hander allowed just three earned runs on eight scattered hits while striking out five batters and walking four. Out of 98 pitches thrown, he threw 58 strikes.
Down 4-0 in the top of the fourth inning, Deering scored one run on a single by Tyler Boisclair, double by Mike Pellerin, and a r.b.i. groundout by Tom Doran.
In the top of the fifth inning, Deering cut the lead to 4-3 on hits by Kody Greenhalgh, Ray Zincone (r.b.i. single), and Mike Pellerin (r.b.i. single).
After Immaculate took a 5-3 lead, Deering tied it at 5-5 in the top of the sixth inning when Andrew In (walk) and Matt Grenier (reached on an error) scored on a two base error by an Immaculate Conception outfielder.
In the top of the seventh inning, Deering took the lead for good when Evan Barrera (single) and Tom Doran (reached on an error) scored on Andrew In's double.
The Junior Wizards, who are now 8-2 on the year, are in position to grab one of the top eight seeds in the upcoming RIPCOA Middle School State Playoffs.
On Monday (5-9-2011), Deering won their seventh league game of the year by defeating the Scarlet Knights of EWG in five innings, 11-1.
Tyler Boisclair, who struck out five batters, picked up the victory by allowing no earned runs on three hits and three walks.

On Thursday (5-5-2011), Deering improved to 6-2 on the year with a 12-3 victory over Scituate Middle School.

On Monday (5-2-2011), Deering rebounded from their loss to Feinstein with a stunning 19-6 victory over Birchwood Middle School of North Providence.
The Junior Wizards belted a season high 23 hits (four extra base hits). Recording hits were Matt Grenier (3/5, three runs scored, and three r.b.i.'s), Kody Greenhalgh (3/3, one double, four runs scored, and three r.b.i.'s), Ray Zincone (4/5, two doubles, two runs scored, and three r.b.i.'s), Trevor Lawton (1/3, three runs scored, and two r.b.i.'s), Tyler Boisclair (2/3, one run scored, and two r.b.i.'s), Mike Pellerin (1/2), Evan Barrera (3/5, one double, and one run scored), Andrew In (3/4, two runs scored, and one r.b.i.), Brian Moretti (1/3, one run scored), and Joe Maynard (2/4, two runs scored).

On Monday (4-25-2011), Deering (4-2) could not contain the high-powered offense of Feinstein and lost in six innings, 11-1.
Feinstein, who had 11 hits (two extra base hits), received 8 walks and benefited from 6 errors committed by Deering.
Offensively, Deering received two hits from Kody Greenhalgh.
On Thursday (4-21-2011), Deering bounced back from their first league loss of the year by winning a road contest against Ponaganset, 9-5.
Led by the one hit relief pitching of Trevor Lawton, Deering was able to hold off a solid Ponaganset nine. Lawton, who retired ten consecutive batters, struck out seven batters and allowed just one hit over the final 4 2/3 innings to earn his second victory of the year.
In the top of the first inning, Deering took a 5-0 lead on two walks and four hits. Matt Grenier led the game off with a walk, advanced to second on a single by Kody Greenhalgh, and scored when the centerfielder dropped a flyball. Tyler Boisclair, then, delivered a two run double to score Greenahalgh and Zincone. Boisclair advanced to third on a fielder's choice and Trevor Lawton walked to put runners at the corners. Boisclair, then, scored on a Tom Doran fielder's choice. Lawton scored the fifth run of the inning when Evan Barrera singled to left field.
In the top of the third inning, Deering made it 6-2 when Tyler Boisclair (hit by pitch) scored on a double by Lawton.
After Ponaganset cut the Deering lead to 6-5 in the third inning, the Junior Wizards manufactured runs late in the game while Lawton stymied the Ponaganset attack.
Offensively, Deering received support from Evan Barrera (three singles, one run scored, and one r.b.i.), Tom Doran (one single and one r.b.i.), Trevor Lawton (one double, three walks, two runs scored, and one r.b.i.), Tyler Boisclair (one double, two runs scored, and two r.b.i.'s), Ray Zincone (one single, one run scored, and two r.b.i.'s), Kody Greenhalgh (two singles and one run scored), and Matt Grenier (three walks, one run scored, and one r.b.i.).
On Tuesday (4-19-2011), Deering (3-1 in league play and 4-1 overall) defeated Davisville in a non league contest, 4-2.

On Friday (4-15-2011), Immaculate Conception came from behind to give Deering their first loss of the year, 9-5. Immaculate scored nine runs on 14 hits and 7 walks.

On Monday (4-11-2011), Deering Middle School won their third consecutive game of the year, 14-7, over the Exeter-West Greenwich.
Deering (3-0) will be looking for their fourth win of the year on Thursday when they take on Immaculate Conception (1-1) who lost 18-0 to Feinstein.
