The West Warwick Junior Varsity team (11-2) captured the Division II-South regular season title and playoff championship this past spring.
West Warwick 10 Westerly 4
In the Division II-South Junior Varsity Championship, West Warwick (11-2) defeated the Bulldogs of Westerly, 10-4.
Junior Nate Grandchamp, who became a reliable pitcher for the Wizard Junior Varsity this spring, picked up the victory by striking out eleven batters and allowing just two earned runs on seven scattered hits in five innings of work. Kyle Beck, who pitched a complete game victory in the Semi-Finals, struck out two batters and walked one over the final two innings of play.
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the third inning, West Warwick took a 5-2 lead on hits by Nate Grandchamp (lead-off single), Matt Masse (single), Greg D'Ambrosca (single), and Drew Doran (three run double).
After Westerly cut the lead to 5-3, the Wizards scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on hits by Andrew Hebert (double), Rich McNeil (r.b.i. single) and Nate Grandchamp (r.b.i. double).
In the bottom of the fifth inning, West Warwick built a 9-4 lead when Drew Doran (hit batsmen) and Alex Casey (hit batsmen) scored a single by Zach DeSchane and a r.b.i. groundout by Anthony Indeglia.
Offensively, the Wizards were led by Nate Grandchamp (4/4, two doubles, one run scored, and one r.b.i.), Rich McNeil (2/4, two runs scored, and one r.b.i.), Greg D'Ambrosca (2/3, two runs scored), Drew Doran (1/3, two runs scored, and three r.b.i.'s), Andrew Hebert (1/4, one double, and one run scored), Matt Masse (1/3, one run scored), Zach DeSchane (1/2, one r.b.i.), Anthony Indeglia (two r.b.i.'s), and Alex Casey (one run scored).
West Warwick 6 Mt. Hope 2
West Warwick advanced to the Division II-South Championship with a 6-2 victory over Mt. Hope. West Warwick, who will face Westerly in the Championship, moved their overall record to 10-2.
Sophomore Kyle Beck, who went the distance, picked up the victory by allowing only two earned runs on six scattered hits. Beck, who struck out seven batters, threw 63 of 89 pitches for strikes.
Defensively, West Warwick backed Beck's complete game effort with errorless ball through the first six innings.
Offensively, the Wizards received contributions from Zack DeSchane (one single), Drew Doran (one single and one run scored), Greg D'Ambrosca (one run scored), Matt Masse (one single and one r.b.i.), Nate Grandchamp (two walks, three stolen bases, and three runs scored), Rich McNeil (one single), and Andrew Hebert (one run scored).
West Warwick 4 Westerly 3
(5-11-2011) Led by the solid five-hit pitching of Nate Grandchamp and Kyle Beck, the Wizards captured sole possession of first place in Division II-South with a 4-3 victory over Westerly. The win not only clinches first place, but also gives West Warwick a Quarter-Final bye in next week's II-South playoffs.
Grandchamp, who pitched the first five innings struck out five batters and did not issue a walk. Beck, who pitched the final two innings, struck out three batters, walked one, and did not allow an earned run.
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning, West Warwick tied it at 1-1 when Andrew Hebert (hit batsmen) scored on singles by Matt Masse (infield hit) and Alex Casey (r.b.i. single).
In the bottom of the second inning, West Warwick went up 2-1 when Rich McNeil reached on an error, stole second base, and scored on an errant throw with two outs.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, West Warwick upped their lead to 3-1 when McNeil walked, stole second, and scored four batters later when Nate Grandchamp was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
After Westerly tied the game with two unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning, West Warwick regain the lead when Tony Correia (fielder's choice) scored on Andrew Hebert's single to centerfield with two outs.
Offensively, the Wizards received hits from Nate Grandchamp (1/3, one double, one r.b.i.), Andrew Hebert (1/3, one run scored, and one r.b.i.), Matt Masse (1/3), Alex Casey (1/3, one r.b.i.), and Kyle Beck (1/2).
LaSalle Frosh 9 West Warwick 2
(5-10-2011) Led by a ten-hit attack off of three pitchers, LaSalle defeated West Warwick, 9-2.
Offensively, the Wizards received hits from Matt Masse (one double and one r.b.i.), Drew Doran (one double), Anthony Indeglia (one single and one run scored), and Tony Correia (one run scored).
West Warwick 6 Rogers 1
(5-3-2011) Led by the consistent pitching of Nate Grandchamp and an errorless game by the infielders and outfielders of West Warwick, the Wizards Junior Varsity upped their record to 8-1 with a 6-1 victory over the Vikings of Rogers.
Grandchamp, who worked four scoreless innings, struck out six batters and allowed just three hits. He threw 36 of 59 pitches for strikes. Rich McNeil, who pitched out of a seventh inning jam, struck out two batters to end the game.
Offensively, the West Warwick received contributions from Nate Grandchamp (two hits batsman and one run scored), Andrew Hebert (one single), Matt Masse (one single and one run scored), Rich McNeil (two infield singles), Zach DeSchane (one single), Kyel Beck (one single and one run scored), Drew Doran (one single and one three run double), and Tony Correia (one single).
West Warwick 7 Burrillville 6
(5-2-2011) Led by an opportunistic offense, the Wizards Junior Varsity captured their seventh win of the year over the Broncos of Burrillville, 7-6.
Picking up the victory was Rich Grenier. Grenier, who was making his third appearance of the year, struck out three batters, walked one batter, and allowed no runs in four innings of work. Out of 47 pitches thrown, the sophomore threw 30 strikes. Dom Bisceglio, who settled down nicely after one tough inning, struck out four batters in three innings of work.
Offensively, West Warwick received support from Drew Doran (r.b.i. triple), Anthony Indeglia (one single), Kyle Beck (one single and three r.b.i.’s), Zach DeSchane (one single and two r.b.i.’s), Andrew Hebert (one r.b.i. double and three runs scored), Alex Casey (one single and one run scored), Matt Masse (two singles), Greg D’Ambrosca (two singles), and Rich Grenier (one double).
West Warwick 2 Narragansett 1
(4-30-2011) Led by the solid pitching of Rich Grenier, Anthony Indeglia, and Drew Doran, the Wizards upped their seasonal record to 5-1 with a 2-1 victory over the Mariners.
Grenier, who was making a rehab start for the Junior Varsity, allowed one run on two hits while striking out three batters and walking one in two innings of work. Out of 44 pitches, 28 were thrown for strikes. Anthony Indeglia, who picked up the victory, struck out three batters and scattered five hits. Out of 59 pitches, 37 were thrown for strikes. Drew Doran, who picked up the save, struck out two batters in the final inning.
Offensively, the Wizards received support from Rich McNeil Jr. (1/3, one run scored), Greg D’Ambrosca (one run scored), Alex Casey (r.b.i. single), and Kyle Beck (1/3).
West Warwick 5 Narragansett 0 (4-30-2011)
Led by the six hit pitching of Kyle Beck, the Wizards posted a 5-0 shutout victory. (4-26-2011) The Crusaders avenged an early season loss to the Wizards with a 10-2 victory at Prout.
