The West Warwick Varsity team rebounded from four difficult years in Division I with a good season in Division II this year. The Wizards (14-7, 13-5 in league play), who finished in second place behind five time divisional champion, Prout, will be returning eight starting players next spring. 

Woonsocket 9  West Warwick 8

(5-27-2011) In the Loser's Bracket Final, the Wizards were eliminated from the playoffs by Woonsocket, 9-8. 

The Wizards (13-5 in league play), who finished in second place in II-South behind five-time divisional champion Prout, finished 2011 with a 14-7 record. 

After trailing 5-1 after two innings, the Wizards fought back in the top of the third inning with three runs on two hits (John Morrison and Ryan Lawton), one walk, and one hit batsmen.

While reliever Drew Doran was cooling down the hot bats of the Villa Novans, the Wizards took a 7-5 lead in the top of fifth inning with three runs on hits by Nate Grandchamp, John Morrison, and Ryan Lawton. 

The Wizards lead, however, would not last as the talented and veteran Villa Novans rallied for four runs over the next two innings to take a 9-8 lead.

Offensively, the Wizards were led by Cam Genest (one run scored), Ryan Lawton (two singles, one triple, one run scored, and two r.b.i.'s), Ryan O'Kelly (one r.b.i.), Garrett DeBlois (two runs scored and one r.b.i.), John Morrison (three singles, one run scored, and one r.b.i.) and Nate Grandchamp (one single, two walks, and three runs scored).   

Ponaganset 3  West Warwick 2

(5-26-2011)  Despite a two-hitter by Cam Genest, the Wizards were upset by Ponaganset, 3-2.  Genest, who pitched seven innings (49 of 74 pitches for strikes), struck out five batters and allowed no earned runs on two hits.  

The Wizards took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when Garrett DeBlois walked, stole second base, moved to third on a passed ball, and scored on Ryan O'Kelly's sacrifice fly. 

In the top of the fourth inning, however, Ponaganset scored three unearned runs on three errors, two hits, and one walk. 

After facing nine batters and throwing 26 pitches, Genest threw only 16 pitches and retired nine consecutive batters over the last three innings.

While Genest was keeping the Chieftain bats quiet, the Wizards cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Dom Bisceglio and Rich Grenier Jr. hit back to back singles to lead off the sixth inning.  Bisceglio scored when Nate LaCroix's grounder to short was thrown into right field. 

With the tying run on third base and the go ahead run at second base, Ponaganset's Joe Crino retired the next three Wizards to end the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Garrett DeBlois led off with a single and advanced to second on an errant throw.  DeBlois, however, would never advance past second base as Crino struck out a batter and induced to pop outs to end the game for the 13th seeded Chieftains. 

Offensively, the Wizards received hits from Garrett DeBlois (two singles, two walks, three stolen bases, and one run scored), Dom Bisceglio (one single and one run scored), Rich Grenier Jr. (one single), and Cam Genest (one single). 

West Warwick 13  EWG 2

(5-25-2011) Led by an eleven run fourth inning, the Wizards defeated the Scarlet Knights of EWG, 13-2, in the Opening Round of the Division II State Playoffs.  

Ryan Lawton, who worked five innings, picked up the victory by striking out four batters and allowing just two earned runs on four hits.   

Offensively, the Wizards received hits from Andrew Hebert (2/2, two runs scored and two r.b.i.'s), Nate LaCroix (1/2, two runs scored), Rich Grenier (2/3, one double, and two runs scored), Dom Bisceglio (1/3, one run scored, and one r.b.i.), Ryan Lawton (2/3, one double, one run scored, and three r.b.i.'s), Garrett DeBlois (1/4), John Morrison (3/4, two runs scored, and four r.b.i.'s), and Nate Grandchamp (1/3, one double, one run scored, and one r.b.i.). 

EWG 11  West Warwick 8 (9 Innings)

(5-22-2011) In the final league game of the year, the Scarlet Knights edged the Wizards, 11-8, in nine innings. The teams will meet in the Opening Round of the Division II State Playoffs.

The Wizards, who committed 10 errors, received solid pitching from Rich Grenier Jr. and John Morrison.  In 4 1/3 innings, Grenier allowed only two earned runs on six hits.  Out of 69 pitches, he threw 44 strikes.  In three innings of relief, Morrison struck out two batters and allowed only two hits.

Offensively, the Wizards received contributions from Nate Grandchamp (three walks), Garrett DeBlois (one walk and one run scored), Ryan O'Kelly (three walks, three stolen bases, and two runs scored), Ryan Lawton (two doubles, three runs scored, and two r.b.i.'s), Nate LaCroix (two walks and one run scored), Dom Bisceglio (two singles, one double, one run scored, and four r.b.i.'s), and Rich Grenier Jr. (two singles, one double, and two r.b.i.'s).

Westerly 7  West Warwick 3

(5-21-2011) In a league game that did not have much importance for either team, the Bulldogs (11-6), who lost to the Wizards (13-4) in a 12 inning game last month, came from behind for a 7-4 victory.  

Trailing 2-1 in the top of the fifth inning, the Bulldogs took the lead for good with three runs on three singles and one hit batsman.  

Offensively, the Wizards received hits from Nate Grandchamp (2/4, one triple, one double, and one run scored), John Morrison (2/4, one double, one single, and one r.b.i.), Ryan O'Kelly (2/3, one run scored, and one r.b.i.), Ryan Lawton (1/3), and Dom Bisceglio (1/3, one r.b.i.).   

West Warwick 13 PCD 0

(5-17-2011) Led by the solid two-hit pitching of Ryan Lawton and a 14 hit attack (8 extra base hits), the Wizards recorded their first back to back shutout victories since 2001.  

Lawton, who pitched the first four innings, struck out six batters and threw 39 of 60 pitches for strikes.  Drew Doran struck out two batters in an eleven pitch fifth inning to seal the victory for the Wizards.

Offensively, the Wizards were led by Nate Grandchamp (2/4, two triples, one run scored, and four r.b.i.'s), John Morrison (2/3, one double, one triple, two run scored, and one r.b.i.), Garrett DeBlois (2/4, one run scored, and one r.b.i.), Ryan O'Kelly (1/3, two runs scored, and one r.b.i.), Ryan Lawton (3/3, two doubles, two runs scored, and one r.b.i.), Nate LaCroix (one r.b.i.), Dom Bisceglio (1/3, one run scored), Rich Grenier Jr. (1/2, one double, two runs scored, and two r.b.i.'s), and Cam Genest (2/4, one double, two runs scored, and two r.b.i.'s). 

West Warwick 11 Hope 0

(5-14-2011) Led by the one-hit pitching of Rich Grenier Jr. and a 12 hit attack, the Wizards shutout out their first opponent since May 13, 2010. 

Playing in their fourth league game of the week, West Warwick needed to find away to rest their pitching staff and the right hander (Grenier) delivered more than what was expected.  Grenier, who was making his first varsity start, shook off early control problems and pitched a complete game shutout.  

After issuing three walks in the first two innings, Grenier,  who struck out four batters, threw 21 of 29 pitches for strikes in the last three innings of play.

The only hit of the  game came in the fifth inning when Arison Martinez hit a single to left field with one out. 

Defensively, the Wizards received a fine effort from reserve catcher Alex Casey, who threw out three runners. 

Offensively, the Wizards were led by Cam Genest (4/4, one double, one run scored, and one r.b.i.), Rich Grenier Jr. (2/4, one run scored, and two r.b.i.'s), Dom Bisceglio (2/3, two runs scoredd, and three r.b.i.'s), Nate LaCroix (three runs scored and one r.b.i.), Ryan Lawton 1/2, two runs scored), Ryan O'Kelly (1/2, two runs scored), Garrett DeBlois (1/4), and  John  Morrison (1/4, one double, and two r.b.i.'s).

Rogers 7 West Warwick 4

(5-13-2011)  Led by the solid pitching of Dan Vieira, the Vikings of Rogers upset the Wizards of West Warwick, 7-4. 

The Wizards, who lost for only the third time of the year, fell prey to the consistent pitching of Vieira, who threw 59 of 87 pitches for strikes. 

West Warwick received hits from Dom Bisceglio (r.b.i. single), Garrett DeBlois (infield single), Ryan O'Kelly (two run single), and Cam Genest (r.b.i. triple).

Kyle Beck, who pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief, allowed only two runners to reach safely via a hit. 

West Warwick 12 Narragansett 5

(5-12-2011) Led by a ten hit attack, the Wizards rolled past the Mariner of Narragansett, 12-5.

Down 3-2 in the top of the fifth inning, West Warwick took advantage of four walks and one hit batsmen.  The Wizards, who scored seven runs in the inning, received a bases clearing two-out triple by Garrett DeBlois.

Offensively, the Wizards received contributions from Nate Grandchamp (two runs scored and one r.b.i.), John Morrison (one run scored, one r.b.i., and two walks), Garrett DeBlois (one triple, two runs scored, and three r.b.i.'s), Nathan LaCroix (two singles, two runs scored, and one r.b.i.), Ryan O'Kelly (two runs scored and two walks), Ryan Lawton (one double, two singles, one run scored, and one r.b.i.), Dom Bisceglio (one triple and one run scored), Rich Grenier Jr. (one single, one run scored, two r.b.i.'s, and two walks), and Andrew Hebert (one single). 

West Warwick 6 Mt. Hope 5

(5-9-2011)  Led by the timely hitting of sophomore Rich Grenier Jr. and the solid relief pitching of sophomore Matt Masse, the Wizards were able to overcome some untimely miscues in a 6-5 league win over the Huskies of Mt. Hope. 

The Wizards, who were 2-16 last year while participating in Division I-South, are now 10-2 with six games remaining on their Division II-South regular season schedule.     

In the top of the first inning, the Wizards, who benefitted from three errors, scored four runs on three hits and one walk.  Nate Grandchamp, who singled to lead off the game, advanced to third base on a two base error by a Huskie outfielder.  John Morrison, then, hit a r.b.i. double to score Grandchamp.  After one out, Nathan Lacroix reached on a walk and Ryan O'Kelly reached on an error to load the bases.  With two outs, Morrison scored when Dom Bisceglio's grounder to second was misplayed.  Rich Grenier followed with a two run single to give the Wizards a 4-0 lead.

After Ryan Lawton's seven pitch first inning, the Wizards made it 5-0 when John Morrison doubled, moved to third on a fielder's choice by Garrett DeBlois, and scored on Nathan LaCroix's sacrifice fly to centerfield. 

The Wizards, however, could not hold onto a 5-0 lead.  In the bottom of the third inning, the Huskies cut the lead to 5-3 when they scored three unearned runs on three walks, two fielding errors, and one single.    

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Huskies tied it up at 5-5 when they scored two more unearned runs on one walk, one fielding error, one infield hit, and two sacrifices. 

In the top of the fifth inning, the Wizards opportunistically pulled ahead  6-5.  With one out, Ryan Lawton reached on a "wind-blown" triple over the head of Mt. Hope's perplexed centerfielder.  After a pop-out, Rich Grenier Jr. hit an r.b.i. single to centerfield to give the Wizards a lead that they would not relinquish.

Matt Masse, who pitched the final three innings, struck out five batters and allowed just one hit.  Out of 27 pitches thrown, he threw 22 strikes.  

Offensively, the Wizards received hits from Nate Grandchamp (2/4, one run scored), John Morrison (3/4, two doubles, two runs scored, and one r.b.i.), Ryan Lawton (2/4, one triple, and oen run scored), and Rich Grenier (2/4, three r.b.i.'s).

West Warwick 3 North Providence 3

(5-7-2011)  In a non league game against North Providence, the Wizards and Cougars played to a 3-3 tie after four innings before the skies were filled beams of lightning.

The Wizards scored all of the runs in the bottom of the second inning on hits by Nathan Lacroix (single), Ryan O'Kelly (two run home run), Ryan Lawton (single), and Dom Bisceglio (single). 

Drew Doran, who pitched four innings, struck out three batters and allowed just three earned runs on seven scattered hits.

Prout 10 West Warwick 3

(5-6-2011)  The Crusaders of Prout High School made it clear that they are still the team to beat in Division II as they took advantage of every Wizard miscue in a 10-3 victory.  The win moves Prout (10-1) one game ahead of the Wizards (9-2) in Division II-South. 

Prout, which has compiled a 73-10 league record since 2007, scored ten runs (four earned) on nine hits (six singles and two doubles), two walks, and four errors.

The Wizards, who outhit the Crusaders 11-9, stranded 14 runners in the game.  In fact, the Wizards left the bases loaded in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. 

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Wizards cut the Crusaders lead to 6-1 when Nate Grandchamp singled with one out and scored three batters later on Ryan O'Kelly's infield hit to short.  With the tying run at the plate, however, Prout lefty Spencer Stall induced a pop up to end the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Wizards squandered perhaps their best chance when they left the bases loaded after opening the inning with three conscecutive singles by Dom Bisceglio, Rich Grenier, and Andrew Hebert (r.b.i.).  With runners at second and third base, Stall induced two pop ups and struck out a batter to end the inning. 

Down 10-2, the Wizards, who received three free passes (Nathan LaCroix, Ryan Lawton, and Rich Grenier) and two hits (Ryan O'Kelly and Dom Bisceglio), only scored one run in the bottom of the seventh inning.  

Offensively, the Wizards, who received hits from 8 of their 9 starters, were led by Nate Grandchamp (1/3, one run scored), John Morrison (1/4), Garrett DeBlois (2/4, one double), Ryan O'Kelly (2/4, one r.b.i.), Ryan Lawton (1/3, one double), Dom Bisceglio (2/4, one run scored, and one r.b.i.), Rich Grenier (1/3), and Andrew Hebert (1/2, one r.b.i.).   

West Warwick 9 Mt. Pleasant 4

(4-29-2011)  After defeating the Kilties of Mt. Pleasant, the Wizards of West Warwick (9-1) ended the month of April with a nine game winning streak. 

Led by the quality pitching of Ryan Lawton, the Wizards were able to overcome a shaky third inning to win this crossover contest.  Lawton, who threw 52 of 76 pitches for strikes, struck out four batters and allowed just three earned runs on five hits.  Matt Masse, who was making his first appearance in nine days, struck out one batter and threw 11 of 12 pitches for strikes in a scoreless seventh inning.

Offensively, the Wizards received contributions from Cam Genest (one run scored and one r.b.i.), Rich Grenier (two runs scored and two walks), Dom Bisceglio (two walks and one run scored), Ryan Lawton (one triple and one run scored), Ryan O'Kelly (one single), Nate LaCroix (one r.b.i. single), Garrett DeBlois (one double, two singles, one run scored, and three r.b.i.'s), John Morrison (one single and one run scored), and Nate Grandchamp (one home run, one single, two runs scored, and three r.b.i.'s). 

West Warwick 7 North Smithfield 3

(4-27-2011)  Led by the solid pitching of Cam Genest, the Wizards defeated the Northmen in a crossover contest, 7-3. 

Genest, who went the distance, struck out three batters and allowed just three runs on seven singles.  Out of 85 pitches thrown, Genest threw 57 strikes.

Down 3-0 in the bottom of the second inning, the Wizards rallied for a run when Nate LaCroix walked, moved to second on a single by Ryan O'Kelly, advance to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Dom Bisceglio's sacrifice fly to centerfield.
